This Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship is designed for those who want to play a key role in supporting teaching and learning in schools. You’ll work alongside teachers to help pupils of all ages and abilities thrive in their education.

What does the course cover?

This apprenticeship will cover the following knowledge, skills and behaviours required to be a qualified Level 3 Teaching Assistant:

Knowledge

  • How to communicate so the voice of the child, young person, or family is heard
  • Factors that create uncertainty in their lives
  • Equality, rights, diversity, and cultural differences
  • Safeguarding risks and thresholds, including domestic violence, online safety, radicalisation, and child exploitation
  • Child, adolescent, and adult development
  • Principles of effective assessment and professional judgement

Skills

  • Build positive relationships and encourage active participation
  • Promote respect, equality, diversity, and inclusion
  • Work collaboratively to keep children and families safe
  • Lead on holistic care plans and interventions
  • Identify barriers and support informed choices

Behaviours

  • Care: Respect and value individuals to keep them safe
  • Compassion: Show concern and understanding
  • Courage: Be honest, confident, and resilient in challenging situations
  • Communication: Build strong, empathic relationships
  • Competence: Apply social care ethics and reflective practice
  • Commitment: Create sustainable, positive change
How will I be assessed?

Your progress will be reviewed regularly through a mix of:

  • Assignments and practical activities
  • Reflective discussions
  • Expert witness testimonies
  • Workplace observations

When you’ve met the required knowledge, skills, and behaviours, your employer and Skills Development Tutor will confirm your readiness for Gateway, the point where you move to the End Point Assessment (EPA).

 

When will I attend?

This programme combines on-the-job and off-the-job training to give you practical experience and structured learning.

  • You’ll complete the minimum requirement of off-the-job training
  • Attend mandatory monthly tutor-led sessions
  • Record your independent study in a reflective learning log, capturing your experiences, reflections, and achievements
  • Receive regular support from a Skills Development Tutor, who will work closely with your workplace mentor to monitor progress
What will I achieve?

On successful completion, you will achieve the following:

  • Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard
  • Functional Skills Maths and English (if required)

You may wish to progress to a higher level of study, please speak to your Skills Development Tutor for information.

What are the entry requirements?
  • If you are aged 16–18 and do not have Level 2 English and maths, you’ll need to achieve these qualifications as part of your apprenticeship.

For apprentices aged 19+:

  • Functional Skills is no longer mandatory.
  • However, if you choose to opt out of Functional Skills, you must have employer approval.

Additional Requirements

  • An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is required to work in this industry.
